VCU Lecture series, Week 2- Creative Economy

Course updates, case study and overview

I had the opportunity to sit down with International traveler and acclaimed artist Benjamin Sack this week. I shared our conversation in the previous Substack post and you can also find my lectures on YouTube. (I’d love to have you subscribe and share!)

The attached video is my lecture/demo from Week 2, where I go over several resources that I am requiring the students to use. Here are the links:

Miro- Online collaboration through an infinite canvas (a free educational license is available for teachers and students)

Discord- student-to-student communication, file sharing and updates. Free service. A great way for students to build a community, as well as a repository of information for future classes.

Gumroad- An online marketplace. I love it for it’s ease of use, robust tools for building and publishing digital products. I launched my first classes through Gumroad, which have generated weel of $100,000 in revenue.

Triple Stamp Press- A Richmond, Virginia based screen printer. They’ve produces some amazing screenprints for me. You can see some examples of my work here: www.sterlinghundley.com

Poster Ninja- Run by Keith Fabry Fabricators here in Richmond, Virginia, but available nationally. I’m truly blown away by their print services- giclees, posters, business cards, stickers. I share a glowing endorsement of Keith Fabry and it’s owner, as you’ll see in the video. I will be using them in the near future for producing giclees for my new business venture with my brother.

Big Cartel- I use Big Cartel as my virtual store front. It comes with a good set of analytics, order tracking and client communication tools.

CASE STUDY

While asking the students to earn their first dollar, I am launching a business venture with my brother, Forrest in parallel to student efforts. My goal is to generate $10,000 in income from $0.79 and to show the students how to do it. Our company will live somewhere between Nerdom and Fandom, Geeks and Jocks. We will be focusing on Limited and Open-edition prints first and collectibles later.

Our first print for sale will be the artwork I created for Akira Kurosawa’s RAN for STUDIOCANAL in the UK. I’m currently securing the licensing agreement to produce this. You can find the actual DVD and Blu-ray set that I designed here.

STEPS

  1. Secure licensing agreement. (in progress)

  2. Research competitors and the marketplace.

  3. Research vendors to produce the prints. (in progress)

  4. Price cost of prints and materials. (completed)

  5. Price of shipping. (in progress)

  6. Design logo and draft mission statement. (in progress)

  7. Name the company. (in progress)

  8. Build a landing page with a waiting list. (in progress)

More steps and updates to follow.

Once we’ve launched, I’ll share the story and steps in their entirety.

I thought I’d share my course syllabus for paid subscribers. Hoping it’s helpful for you. Please let me know if there are additional resources that I might have that could be of assistance to you.
